An Introduction to Pelican Products
There are times in your life when you need secure storage that will withstand the elements and hard impacts. There’s also times that you need a flashlight that does the same. But often times waterproof isn’t really waterproof, heavy duty isn’t heavy duty and you find out the hard way. That’s what happened to Dave Parker in 1976 and caused him to create Pelican Products. Parker, a longtime scuba diver, realized there was a need in the world for flashlights and carrying cases that were tough enough to withstand the rigors of scuba diving and other adventures. For the past 42 years Pelican Products has been an American-based company manufacturing much of their inventory in Torrance, CA. They’ve also expanded their reach and are now a truly global brand with products being used across many different industries from personal use up to military and in industries like aerospace. It’s an impressive story of success with a product that’s just as impressive.
Pelican’s variety of flashlights is quite impressive. Made from their high quality plastic, most will be up to a good amount of abuse, but it really depends on what the light was designed for. They’ve also made some interesting design choices, some flashlights have a swivel head, some glow in the dark. Some do both. The handles are uniquely designed and comfortable to hold and the lights operate on LED’s and are impressively bright. In addition to the conventional flashlights, they also make several different headlamps for various uses including for use as a light that’s safe to use in chemical plants and of course, the Nemo which is designed for scuba divers. The Nemo lights come in a variety of colors and a few different sizes and are of course named after the master of the sea, Captain Nemo, from the classic and highly readable novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Pelican lights are widely recognized as intrinsically safe and of course, powerful, making them perfect for industrial work or extreme hobbies.
Speaking of extreme, Pelican cases are also designed to store and carry sensitive or expensive equipment in extreme environments. The cases made by Pelican are so tough that they have an entire section of their website dubbed “Survival Stories” and these stories showcase the various kinds of destruction these cases have survived. Pelican cases and the contents within have survived mountain treks in India, tsunamis, superstorms, the Gobi desert and even various and massive explosions. Happy Explosion Day! Those are just a few examples. These stories highlight how those calamities didn’t damage laptops, cameras, cell phones and combat robots. Long story short, these cases will protect whatever you put in them. Each case is available in different colors and there’s a variety of options for foam inserts to customize the case for your individual needs. Pelican has also used this expertise to design and manufacture coolers and biothermal shipping containers. Should your Pelican case somehow fail in the mission to protect your gear, Pelican has a great warranty program.
