Features
In coarse grades, the Standard Abrasives Silicon Carbide Cartridge Roll is used for high-speed grinding and deburring on all metals, as well as glass and composites. Its small size and shape enable it to reach into holes and diameters of machined parts or deburr irregular surfaces and contours. Super sharp silicon carbide suits hard-to-grind metals such as titanium, as well as softer surfaces.
Recommended Applications
Choose a Standard Abrasives™ Silicon Carbide Cartridge Roll when you need to grind or deburr hard-to-reach areas of the workpiece. It is ideal for getting into grooves, slots, threads or channels, punched or drilled holes, and contoured surfaces such as car parts. Combining an aggressive cut with durability makes it a great solution for edge breaking and removal of machine tool marks or flash.
Cartridge rolls are either straight or tapered. The cylindrical shape of the straight cartridge roll passes easily over and into irregular contours, while the tapered roll excels at reaching into corners and very tight diameters such as punched or drilled holes.
Running a Cartridge Roll on a High-Speed Tool
The cartridge roll has an arbor hole to accommodate a mandrel tool attachment (sold separately), which attaches to a rotary tool such as a die grinder or drill. The mandrel should have a pilot length no less than 1/2˝ shorter than the length of the cartridge roll.
Super Sharp Silicon Carbide Leaves a Fine Finish
Silicon Carbide is harder and sharper than either aluminum oxide or zirconia alumina. It is most commonly used for low-pressure applications such as paint prep and the final stages of whitewood sanding. While it may have a shorter life than aluminum oxide, it produces a superior finish and should be used when a fine scratch pattern is desired.
Benefits of a Multi-Layer Design
Seemingly small, these cartridge rolls conquer big challenges when space gets tight. The multi-layer, multi-wear design of Standard Abrasives™ Zirconia Cartridge Roll keeps it cutting sharp and helps it withstand repeated wear. As top layers wear down with use, underlying layers expose fresh mineral, so you get a continuous and consistent cut, part after part. Wrapping multiple layers of the abrasive material around into a roll contributes to its sturdiness and durability.
A resin bond securely anchors mineral to the cloth backing – also enhancing the abrasive's toughness and strength. The closed-coat construction means mineral grains cover 100 percent of the cloth backing, so that a smoother, more consistent finish is achieved.
